La Estudiante with San Juan Bautista

This statue of John the Baptist faces away from the church, looking onto the plaza. It was unveiled in December, 2000 and is a representation of the mission's patron saint. "the image bears the features of the Native American Mutsen band of Ohlones who inhabited the Mission 200 years ago. With an ecstatic facial expression and outstretched arms, the Baptist acknowledges an unseen Spirit. The base of the statue bears the Native American equivalent of the symbols of the four evangelists. The face of a mountain lion represents Mark, a bison for Luke, a golden eagle for John, and a Native American for Matthew."5
